What #trended on social in 2017?
2017 has nearly come and gone… To no surprise it’s been a HUGE year in the world of social media! Technology, influencers, user behaviour, brand behaviour, audience demographics, creative/content style… you name it, and its changed!!!
We have pulled out what we think the top 5 biggest movements on social throughout 2017 were!
- Social Network Algorithm Marketing
Unfortunately, It is no longer as simple as delivering good content to a defined target audience. Gone is the era of chronological newsfeed, algorithms have taken over. The change was first made by Facebook, followed by Instagram in 2016. It has not stopped there – YouTube, Pinterest and even LinkedIn have now adopted this algorithmic model.
- Employee Advocacy
Throughout 2017 we have seen more and more brands use employee advocacy as a content pillar. Why? What better brand advocate than someone who is immersed in the day to day! This method humanises brands to prospective markets, the research agrees! Employees can have up to further reach than the brand alone.
- Social media e-commerce
More brands are using social media platforms as a direct path to purchases for customers. Why? Consumers are in a leisure mindset when on their newsfeed, allowing users to convert directly on your social media platforms is a great way to increase your conversion rate. In this busy world, the shorter the path to conversion the better.
- Influencer content
Don’t get me wrong leveraging influencers via social has been around for a long time! In 2017 however influencers became more of an necessity than an added bonus. Why? Influencers are a powerful link to engage with your target market. This could be as simple as one Instagram post, the general formula looks a bit like this – (influencers + product + brand + post = reach + engagement + sales)
- Virtual Reality (VR)
Now this one is not for the faint hearted. Many companies have taken on Virtual Reality and reaped huge benefits. Why? VR = Engagement. VR offers a never before seen way for brands to portray their products, events, and services. More than anything it’s a way of showing consumers that your brand is at the forefront of technology and innovation. Take for example TOMs, the English shoe brand documented their charity marketing campaign through a fully immersive video which allowed users to follow the lives of disadvantaged families in Peru. Now for brands with a slightly smaller marketing budget, the easiest way to do this Facebook 360 video!
- Social Messaging
This one aligns with trend 4, and the movement brands have taken to sell products and services directly on social platforms. Messenger buttons on ads are now a common feature on ads. Why? It allows an instant and transparent line of communication between brand and client, and thus a shorter more convenient path to purchase for users.
