Instagram Carousels – A How To Guide

If you’re scratching your head right now, thinking Instagram… carousel… I thought that was more of Facebook thing?!  I’m not surprised, carousels are one of the must underutilized ad units offered by Instagram. Why? Who knows! No matter what industry, product, or service, Instagram carousels open up a world of possibility for businesses to be creative, tell their brand story, engage with fans, and most importantly drive action from customers.

So lets start with the basics… What is it, and what can I do with it? An Instagram carousel allows you to  so that we (consumers) can swipe through to view them all in a fun sequence.

Alright, so now we know what we are working with, lets take a look at some smart (and engaging) examples of Instagram carousels so you can get them up and running on own businesses Instagram page! Below are 8 easy ways to leverage the carousel ad unit, along with examples (What more could you need!)!

8 Simple ways your business can use Instagram Carousels!

ONE: Share HOT Tips…

Example: If you were a cafe owner you could use each carousel panel to display menu pairing options, or which wines you recommend to drink with which meals (added bonus is that you are also encouraging your audience to make a double purchase!)

TWO: Create Tutorials…

Example: A beauty brand could post before and after shots in each carousel panel to powerfully portray the impacts of their products. The first panel could show the final image, and the second video shows how they did it. This will create a very strong visual, and really showcase your product to consumers.

THREE: Create A Sliding Picture Or Map…

Example: This great way to get creative and drive interaction. Confused? Check the below example from HP! When you design your content, create the image so that one slide merges into the next. This effect could be used across an array of industries – for example tourism businesses giving tips for how to travel around a particular area or city. Or Subway used it for “Sub of the Day Promo”.

FOUR: Explain A Concept With Visuals…

Example: Easil (Digital Creative Editing Tool), used this method to explain (slash slow), the difference between hard and soft edges with drop shadow. Remember guys – a picture is worth 1,000 words! Does your brand have a product or service which is hard to sum up with words? Why not use a carousel!

The difference between an awesome drop shadow text effect and a bad one, often comes down to a subtle shift. Your drop shadow or glow effect should “lift” the design… it shouldn’t become the design. Swipe left to switch from a soft drop shadow to a hard one. . SOFT…. If you can blur the shadow into the background, it will make your text pop just enough to really catch the eye (without being overbearing). Think “soft”, “faded” or “blurry” effects over your images. . HARD…. Hard edges work well for modern designs. For hard-edged text, have a solid, hard-edged shadow that matches your font. In other words, go hard. . If you are not sure where to start with drop shadows and text effects, check out our new post, "How to Create Drop Shadow Effects that Don't Suck" (Link in bio). And be sure to check out our Text Shadow Tool in Easil. It makes drop shadows way more easy to create (without making them suck!) . . .

FIVE: Create A How-To Slideshow….

Example: A gardening brand could create a 10 panel “Story Board” of how to make your own veggie patch! Refinery29 used this format to teach people how to make a hanging plant pot.

SIX: Showcase an Event…

Example: Do you ever find yourself scratching your head wondering which image to use in your Instagram post the morning after an event? Problem solved! You can now choose a great image as your cover image, then back it up some extras!

SEVEN: Take your audience behind the scenes…

Example: This one is pretty self-explanatory… give your audience a unique look in your brand by taking them behind the scenes! This will really help humanise your brand, while also driving brand awareness and building long term relationships. Check out the below great example form Airbnb!

EIGHT: To Show user generated content…

Example: Got a bunch of content from customers and that you are not quite sure how to utilize? Why not whack it all into a simple and sheik looking carousel! Check out the below great example from Canva!

Now it’s over to you! Above are 8 fantastic ways you can leverage the Instagram carousel. Remember that visuals come first, while captions and hashtags go along way – INSTAGRAM IS A VISUAL PLATFORM. Secondly – post consistently, and make sure you stay on brand!
