Emoji’s and Social Media – Whats the deal there?
Do you ever look at some Facebook Ads, and just think “wow – the use of that emoji in that post is just 10/10 spectacular!” ?Okay maybe the above is a bit of an exaggeration, but let me assure you – emoji’s and how to use them is a daily grind for content writers and social strategists.
Firstly – let’s get one thing straight…brands using EMOJI’S IS A THING! They are relatable, they take up about a 10th of the space of words, and they are downright hilarious! Emoji’s are used by consumers every single day, but weirdly, uptake by brands has been a bit… well… slow…
So – Could your brand benefit from using Facebook emoji’s? Let’s find out!
Does emoji marketing work?
The pioneering brands of Facebook emoji’s were Chevrolet and Dominos (both circa 2015).
1) Chevrolet released its famous all-emoji press release
1) Dominos made it possible to order a pizza by simply tweeting an emoji
I know what you’re thinking “these are huge brands, with an already established following, what about me?” – What if I told you that Facebook conducted a case study a/b testing emoji vs no emoji, the result – the ad with emoji had a 241% higher click-through rate than the ad with no emoji! Now are you listening?
How to use emoji’s in Facebook marketing…
1. Know the meaning behind the emoji…
Seems pretty simple right? WRONG. You would be surprised how many brands use emoji’s out of context, and out of context to the point that they are putting their brands reputation at risk. Hint 101 – google the meaning of the eggplant emoji before using it in copy. I could also say the same for the corn, banana and milk bottle emoji. The emoji portfolio is an ever growing one… make sure you keep an eye on the latest emoji developments and meanings.
2. Use emoji for real-time engagement and reactive messaging
Reactive content or posts about current topical events is are always a BIG YES on social media, your posts need to be fluid with the times (i.e. not appear to be written/scheduled a fortnight in advance). Now – a reactive post combined with the clever use of an emoji or two (many 20), is an even bigger win. Check out this post from Bud Light… Not bad right!
3. Don’t be too Cryptic!
Social media only works if you’re able to communicate a message clearly. Don’t leave your audience scratching their heads with your emoji use. Remember this is a Newsfeed, not the cryptic crossword in the Sunday paper, you have at max 20 seconds to grab a user’s attention before they scroll on down to the post below yours. Take for example the tweet used by Chevrolet to announce the 2016 Cruze model in #ChevyGoesEmoji campaign…. Say what??? While emoji-exclusive copy does have the potential for some awesome engagement and unique brand messaging… Make sure its relatable to those of average intelligence!
